Searching and browsing
Our search facility can be used to find books by Title, Author or by a keyword.
Just click on Search in the menu bar and a separate box will appear. Type in the
word or words you wish to search on and then click ‘Search’. Results
pages will then be displayed.
Because our stock is relatively small (approx 2200 books at present), you should
have no great difficulty browsing all books within a category. All book titles
are listed alphabetically.
How to read a catalogue entry
All our books are fully collated, and guaranteed complete unless otherwise stated.
All significant defects, repairs, and refurbishments are clearly recorded in our
catalogue entries. Some cataloguing terms may be unfamiliar to customers, and
in the glossary below are listed the more commonly encountered phrases.
Placing an order
For online orders simply click 'Add to Cart' next to the item you wish to purchase
and then click 'Checkout'. You will be then be directed to a page where you are
requested to select your payment method: Worldpay, PayPal or Cheque. The following
credit cards are accepted by our Worldpay facility: Visa, Mastercard Switch, Solo
and JCB.

Please inform us in advance that you are sending payment by postal mail, so that
we can confirm we have the book(s) and reserve them. Books will be reserved for
a maximum of 10 business days.

Glossary of terms used in book listings:
MINT = Perfect condition -impossible to tell from new.
FINE = Near perfect. Small signs of ownership & storage.
VERY GOOD = Slight fading or rubbing marks to cover. Pages show very little signs
of usage or storage .
GOOD = Obvious signs that book is used, but complete and generally clean with
few signs of marking.
FAIR = Complete but signs that book has had a good deal of usage.
POOR = Really bad condition. For example: well used, cover seriously damaged,
spine missing or hanging off, warped, preliminary pages missing although text
complete. We only sell books in this condition if they have a valuable information
content. We will describe the type of damage to the book and also indicate if
there is any lost information.
Jacket Mint, Fine, Good, Very Good = Dust cover conditions. The descriptions above
apply.
No Jacket = Dust cover is missing.
Foxing = Brownish discolouration of pages normally caused by a combination of
ageing and the quality of the paper.
Foxing Spots = These are normally brown in colour and again caused by a combination
of ageing and the quality of the paper.
Enclosed tear = The page or cover is torn but still complete.
Open tear = Part of the page or cover is missing.
Book dimensions
Folio, 4TO, 8VO, 16MO, etc.. = The size from the top to the bottom of the book
cover. See below. Book sizes have numerous gradations within each format, but
are normally stated to be one of the following:
Folio: Largest size, on average around 16" x 10", rather tall and narrow
in appearance.
4TO or quarto: Squarer in appearance, around 10" x 8".
8VO or octavo: Most common book size at around 8" x 5". Most of today's
hardbacks are 8VO.
12MO, 16MO, 24MO, 32MO: Progressively smaller size books, ranging from c 6"
x 3.5" downwards. Mass-market paperback books tend to be 12MO.
Binding types
Contemporary: A contemporary binding refers to one produced at the time of the
original publication of the book, not contemporary to the present date.
Original boards, original cloth, publisher's boards or cloth: Binding in which
the book was originally issued for sale.
Full binding: The book is totally covered in a leather binding.
Half binding: The spine and corners of the book are covered in leather, but not
the whole of the covers.
Quarter binding: Only the spine is leather covered.
